Acura planning RSX successor?

Good news, Hondaphiles: Acura may be planning a return to the sports car game. According to Motor Trend, the Japanese automaker has plans to add up to three new performance-oriented models to its lineup over the next few years. While that includes a spiritual successor to the NSX, it may also mean that the RSX will return to life, as well. The entry-level sports hatch was nixed in the U.S. back in 2006, leaving the TSX to carry the burden of luring younger buyers to the brand.

MT reports that the RSX-successor is on the Acura near-term agenda, and that while supply issues kicked up by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters in Japan my delay the vehicle somewhat, it shouldn't be long before we start seeing three-door mules kicking around on public streets.

Under the hood, the vehicle will likely pack a modified version of the same 201-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine found in the recently unveiled 2012 Honda Civic Si. Expect to find a six-speed manual cog box, complete with a helical limited-slip differential, bolted behind that mill. Of course, this particular report has been kicking around since 2009, so we'll wait for a little more solid confirmation before busting out the welcome-back party hats.

Toyota recalls more than 50,000 Tundra trucks

Toyota Motor Sales today announced that it will conduct a voluntary safety recall on about 51,000 2011 Tundra trucks to inspect the rear drive shaft. The rear drive shaft in an estimated 0.05 percent of the vehicles may include a component (slip yoke) that could break because of improper casting during the foundry process. According to the Japanese automaker, there are no reports of accidents or injuries associated with this condition, and no other Lexus or Toyota vehicles are involved in the recall.

Toyota will inspect or replace the rear drive shaft for free. The inspection takes about 10 minutes, the company said. Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a letter advising them of the recall. Information regarding the recall is included on the Toyota Web site or by calling Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

The Mitsubishi i will be available to test drive at Cutter Mitsubishi in Aiea, Hawaii, this fall.

The energy-efficient, five-door Mitsubishi i will launch in Hawaii, California, Oregon, and Washington in November 2011. The vehicle will be available nationwide by the end of 2012.

The Mitsubishi i, with an expected driving range of 85 miles, takes 6 hours at 240V and 22.5 hours at 120V for a full charge. Mitsubishi says it will waive the $99.99 home electrical inspection fee for the first 2,000 Hawaiian residents who place a reservation and purchase the vehicle. The home electrical system inspection is to make sure that the owner's home system can efficiently charge the Mitsubishi i.

"We thank Mitsubishi Motors for choosing Hawaii as one of the first states to receive the new 'i' electric car. Electric vehicles use a fraction of the fuel needed by traditional cars, so each EV on the road means we're reducing our dependence on imported oil and increasing our ability to reach Hawaii's goal of 70 percent clean energy within a generation," said Estrella Seese, acting energy program administrator for the Hawaii State Energy Office.
